Is it sad that I know more about the Senate race in Delaware than the elections I can vote for in my own state?
I don't know. I do know that there might be a little bit more to the latest Christine O'Donnell thing about separation of church and state than just her remarks.
Some churches don't believe in separation of church and state. They don't want the government to interfere in their business, but they do want to be able to influence decisions the government makes. I went to school at one of these churches. Some of the things Christine O'Donnell said are things we were taught in school.
The three big ones are:
"The term 'Separation of Church and State' doesn't appear in the Constitution."
"Separation of Church and State is in the Soviet Constitution, not the American Constitution."
"Thomas Jefferson talked about Separation of Church and State, outside of the Constitution, but it was to keep the State out of the Church and not the Church out of the State."
There is some truth to each one of those statements, not to say the point they are trying to make is true, though. Actually, this site did a pretty good job addressing those and even offering up some I hadn't heard of. It's worth a read.
I'm not proud for linking to a page on a Atheism site. I also don't want to suggest that our leaders shouldn't be influenced by Christianity. In fact, I think that if there is something our leaders need more of, it would be Christian values and character. And not just talking about theses values, but actually living them out.
A number of values I think Washington needs more of, in no particular order:
Honesty
Faithfulness
Accountability
Compassion for the poor/disadvantaged
Justice
Humility
Dependability
whatever. Whenever you hear about Christine O'Donnell in the future, just remember that it's just one Senate seat from Delaware. If you don't live in Delaware then whatever happens with her is only for your entertainment. Yeah, it's kind of weird that she talked about dabbling in witchcraft the way normal people would talk about dabbling in collecting beanie babies. Yeah, she did poorly in a debate. whatever.
And I'm not saying that the overall outcome of the election isn't important either. I just still think it's sad that I know more about this race, or the Illinois Governor's race than my own Governor's race. I guess that's enough writing--I better start researching candidates...
