I don't know if it's even wroth calling it a game of the week anymore, but I really enjoyed this one:
Spitfire 1940
It's an allocation of resources strategy game, which is probably my favorite type of game. It's based on World War II (hence the title).
I liked how it used the "Intelligence" feature. Having good intelligence really made a difference in this game. It also seemed to be a failure unique feature among the games I've plaid.
It could have been better if letting your cities get bombed had a bigger impact on your campaign. I mean, London takes 50% damage in a bombing raid, but it's no big deal because you can just send a few builders out to rebuild the city in a matter of turns.
Shouldn't things like that have an effect on Morale and production? And there is a morale factor that affects your recruiting, but it seems to be purely random. Taking damage to your radar district affects intelligence, but that's the only district you really "need" to protect.
I mean, the gist of the game is to produce as many pilots and planes as possible and to figure out the best way to maximize the number of piloted planes you can deploy to areas getting attacked. If a factory gets bombed, shouldn't your production go down until it's rebuilt? If a city gets bombed, shouldn't there be some recourse so the player really wants to prevent it.
I know this isn't real life, but if even one bomb were dropped on London, that would be a pretty big deal. In the game, it's not really a big deal. I know...games aren't real life. Still, I'm not too happy about the indifference to historically ficitional tragedy I gained from playing the game.
whatever.
